Southern NSW Dohne sheep bound for Chile

By Laurissa Smith | 17 Jun 2014 | ABC Rural

Australian Dohne sheep are helping to revive Chile’s interest in the breed.

A consortium of South American farmers have purchased seven ewes and two rams from a stud at Corowa, near the New South Wales-Victorian border.

The dual purpose Merinos are about to head into quarantine, before they board three flights to reach their new home.

Dohne stud breeder Don Mills says the live export venture is very encouraging for the Australian industry.

“This is the first time that I can say that live animals have gone.

“There’s been frozen embryos go, way back in about 2002.

“This newer export of genetics has been across different studs, throughout south eastern Australia mostly and I guess they’re looking to get a diversity of genetics.”

Many South American sheep flocks are based around the Corriedale breed.

Mr Mills says the consignment of embryos that were sent to Uruguay from Western Australia 12 years ago are starting to make a difference in the South American Dohne market.

“About 18 months ago there was a sale of pure-bred and part-bred Dohne’s In Uraguay and those animals averaged roughly around $1,300 US, which is good money for sheep over there.

“Since then its really rekindled the interest in Dohne sheep.”
